History & Culture – Monument Area (UNESCO) + Kongernes Jelling

Monument Area (outdoor)
The area around the mounds, rune stones, and church is today called the Monument Area. Covering an area the size of 20 football fields, there is plenty of space to explore, settle down for a break, or enjoy a picnic at one of the benches. A particularly fine viewpoint can be found from the top of the mound north of the church.

Experience Centre (indoor)
In the award-winning visitor centre, you can learn about the Viking kings Gorm and Harald, their rune stones, the great ship setting, and the enormous palisade erected more than 1,000 years ago.

Day 2

Art & Design – KOLDINGHUS – FROM ROYAL CASTLE TO MODERN DESIGN

In the mid-1200s, the king built Koldinghus to guard the border between Denmark and Schleswig. After a devastating fire in 1808, the castle lay in ruins for almost 100 years before reconstruction began. Today, the restored ruin itself is an attraction and houses a major museum of art and culture.

The architects Inger and Johannes Exner left the ruin visible and used wood and steel for the new supporting structures. Their bold solution was awarded the Europa Nostra Prize in 1993.

TRAPHOLT – MUSEUM OF MODERN ART & DESIGN
Trapholt’s architecture is an attraction in its own right. Built around a central “museum street,” it offers changing exhibitions with Danish and international artists and designers.

Highlights include Arne Jacobsen’s Kubeflex summer house – the only one of its kind – and “YOUR Exhibition,” where you curate your own display from the museum’s collection.

The museum is beautifully situated in a sculpture park with gardens above Kolding Fjord. From the café and terrace, there are spectacular panoramic views. The design shop features a wide selection of Danish and international interior design.

Day 3

History & Culture – CHRISTIANSFELD

In 1771, King Christian VII invited the Moravian Brethren from Herrnhut to establish a settlement in Christiansfeld. They accepted and built a town from scratch. Following the traditional Moravian town plan, it is so well-preserved today that Christiansfeld is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The invitation may have been surprising, since the previous king, Christian VI, had expelled them. But in the spirit of the Enlightenment, Christian VII welcomed them back, hoping they would bring growth and prosperity to Schleswig.

By the early 1800s, more than 700 inhabitants and 21 crafts had settled in the town. Among them were bakers, which explains why Christiansfeld is still famous for its honey cakes.

History & Culture – TRACES of the Occupation (MARK Museum)
Experience the history of the railway during the German occupation. Through five themes, the exhibition tells stories of resistance, sabotage, daily life, German refugees, and the Fitting refugee camp – giving a local and vivid picture of life in Billund Municipality during the occupation.

Art & Design / Outdoors – Tørskind Sculpture Park
Near Egtved lies one of Denmark’s few landscape sculpture parks. Nine monumental works by Robert Jacobsen and Jean Clareboudt interact with the dramatic terrain, forming one large artwork. Parking and toilets are available. The hilly landscape is not suitable for wheelchairs.

Outdoors – Winter Bathing at Lyshøj Fjord Bath
On the north side of Kolding, the pier stretches 85 m into Kolding Fjord, offering stunning views. Facilities include accessible toilets, changing rooms (open daily 6–22), and a sauna for members of the local winter bathing club.

Outdoors – Winter Bathing at Vejle Fjord
Near Vejle at Tirsbæk Beach, a lovely pier with sauna and changing rooms makes winter bathing an invigorating experience – just like the Vikings once did.

Gastronomy – Fary Lochan Distillery
One of the world’s smallest distilleries – but no less fascinating. A guided tour (approx. 1½ hours) takes you through the small buildings and underground passages, explaining the whisky-making process from start to finish. The tour ends in the showroom with a tasting of selected products. Tours must be booked in advance. Shop open weekdays 9–14.

Gastronomy – Bellas Bed & Breakfast
Recharge yourself – and your electric car – at Bellas B&B. Wake up to a brunch made from locally produced quality ingredients. The surrounding area invites you to explore nature, and your hosts can share tips to hidden gems.

Gastronomy – The Grand Tasting at Skærsøgaard Vineyard
Learn the story of Skærsøgaard wines in Denmark’s only certified wine district, DONS. Enjoy a tour of the facilities and taste four selected wines. Duration approx. 2½ hours.
